The Appraisal Organiser
Af Mike Tilling, Mary Birch
- Personnel & human resources management
Despite its importance and its ubiquity, the appraisal process remains - at best - a chore and - at worst - a total mystery to many managers and their staff. Many organisations overlook the needs and expectations of the different stakeholders in the process, with the result that the appraisal becomes a fruitless but compulsory annual exercise.Mike Tilling and Mary Birch's The Appraisal Organiser identifies and addresses the needs of four different stakeholders:- The appraiser - who is provided with input and materials to help them understand the role and benefits of the appraisal process; guidance on how to prepare themselves and their people for the appraisal; coaching on the techniques and skills; in fact, every aspect of the appraisal.- The appraisee - who is helped to pinpoint their own expectations; prepare for the process; self-appraise and look forward to ways of developing him or herself. Volume Three of The Appraisal Organiser includes 20 personal development units, on which the appraisee can draw following the appraisal, as a starting point for improving key skills such as team leadership, networking techniques, understanding change and report writing.- The trainer or HR specialist - who represents the organisation and is responsible for developing managers in the skills of performance management. Volume Two of The Appraisal Organiser includes ready-to-use training materials for just this purpose.- The supervisor or team leader - who may or may not be conducting the appraisal themselves, but who is crucial in ensuring follow-up after the meeting and the continuing development of team members. The materials in The Appraisal Organiser help put this role in perspective and provide the tools for enabling this part of the process. The Appraisal Organiser is divided into three separate volumes:- Volume One: Strategies, Techniques and Tools, is based upon the principles of open learning. It provides both theory and analysis, and includes activities to stimulate thinking about the appraisal process, checklists and sample forms.- Volume Two: Training Sessions, includes ten outline training sessions for developing appraisers. Each session includes a suggested training style, aims and objectives, timing, a 'degree of difficulty' indicator plus full explanation of how to organise the material and run the session.- Volume Three: Self-Development Units, emphasises creative thinking and personal initiative. Each of the 20 personal development units sets out to help individuals answer the question 'How can I contribute more?' Alongside each unit, there are guidance materials for the line manager or coach who may be facilitating the development process. All of the material in The Appraisal Organiser is provided as photocopy masters to enable you to make maximum use of each of the different formats of material for everyone in your organization. As a complete and holistic tool for improving the perception, execution and consequent effectiveness of the appraisal process in your organisation, The Appraisal Organiser is second to none.
